Puig, Ortiz and Bhullar among The International Series golden boys going for glory at the Paris Olympics

2024-06-18

A trio of champions on The International Series will be going for gold at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, after Carlos Ortiz, David Puig and Gaganjeet Bhullar all qualified for the 60-strong field which will contest the men’s golf tournament at Le Golf National from 1-4 August.

The trio are part of a strong Asian Tour representation participating in the prestigious event after securing their places in the top 60 of the Olympic Golf Rankings, which were confirmed on Monday at the conclusion of last weekend’s US Open, won by Bryson DeChambeau of Crushers GC on the LIV Golf League.

Rahul Singh, Head of The International Series, said: “At The International Series, we are proud of our status as a home to world-class talent from all over the world, with 48 different countries represented by players from the Asian Tour and the LIV Golf League.

“With nine regulars on The International Series representing six different countries and three different continents at the Olympic Games, this achievement underscores our efforts to be truly international and inclusive. We wish all players the best of luck in Paris.”

Ortiz, the current Rankings leader on The International Series, will represent Mexico for the second successive Games. The 33-year-old Torque GC star, who won International Series Oman in February at Al Mouj Golf, also triumphed earlier this month at LIV Golf Houston.

Puig, who claimed his first ever tournament win at International Series Singapore last season, secured a place on the Spain team alongside two-time Major winner Jon Rahm. The 22-year-old’s place was confirmed after the Fireballs GC man made the cut at the US Open and finished 55th at Pinehurst No.2 this weekend.

Puig has been in tremendous form this season. Currently third on The International Series Rankings, Puig won the Malaysian Open at the start of the season and finished runner-up to John Catlin at the International Series Macau presented by Wynn after losing out to the American in a thrilling play-off.

Indian star Bhullar, an 11-time champion on the Asian Tour, will represent India at the Games. The 36-year-old memorably claimed a wire-to-wire, five-shot victory at The International Series season-ender, BNI Indonesian Masters presented by Tunas Niagi Energi, in Jakarta last season.

A number of other players who have participated on The International Series will be battling it out in Paris.

Phachara Khongwatma isecured three top-five finishes last season, and he will represent Thailand alongside Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who finished T14 the International Series Macau presented by Wynn.

In-form Joaquin Niemann will represent Chile for the second successive Games. The Torque GC captain finished third outright behind team-mate Ortiz and Louis Oosthuizen at the International Series Oman in February.

Abraham Ancer will play alongside Ortiz for Mexico. The Fireballs GC star finished T38 at International Series Oman behind his compatriot in February.

Other International Series stalwarts including Shubhankar Sharma and Gavin Green will also be playing for Olympic glory, representing India and Malaysia respectively.
