The International Series secures top Asian Tour awards

2024-12-24

A hugely successful season on The International Series has been recognised with a number of significant Asian Tour awards for the 2024 campaign.

Black Mountain Championship, the fifth of 10 elevated events on the calendar, has been confirmed as The Tournament of the Year.

The Black Mountain Championship was won in dramatic fashion by MJ Maguire, with the American holding his nerve to edge out hot favourite John Catlin in a sudden-death play-off as the heavens opened on the magnificent Black Mountain course.

The first of two events in a Thailand double-header took place from 17-20 October in Hua Hin, and the high-profile tournament signalled the start of a hectic run of six events in eight weeks to decide The International Series Rankings race.

The iconic Al Mouj Golf in Doha, venue for the season-opening International Series Oman, was named the Players’ Choice Course of the Year.

LIV Golf League star Carlos Ortiz of Torque GC was victorious on Al Mouj with the Mexican claiming a four-shot victory over his nearest challenger, 2010 Open champion and Stinger GC skipper Louis Oosthuizen, as The International Series campaign got underway from 22-25 February.

The Link Hong Kong Open, the eighth of 10 elevated events on the calendar which took place from 21-24 November, was voted The International Series Tournament of the Year.

Former Masters champion Patrick Reed, winner of the famous green jacket in 2018, claimed a three-shot victory over defending champion Ben Campbell in front of bumper crowds on the Composite Course at Hong Kong Golf Club.

Reed, who plays for 4Aces GC on the LIV Golf League, shot a sensational third-round 59 on his way to a victory that will live long in the memory.

American Catlin was awarded The Kyi Hla Han Award for the Player of the Year on the Asian Tour thanks to an unparalleled season.

The 34-year-old became the first player on the Asian Tour to break 60 when he shot a 59 on his way to a thrilling play-off victory over David Puig at International Series Macau presented by Wynn, the second tournament of the campaign from 14-17 March.

He followed that up by winning the Saudi Open presented by PIF the following month and was regularly in the hunt for a third win in the season, only losing out to Campbell in a dramatic play-off for the International Series Morocco title in July and again to Maguire in Thailand. Catlin also finished second in the Yeangder TPC, third in the Malaysian Open, and tied for fourth in the SJM Macao Open.

The Asian Tour Order of Merit champion for 2024 also impressed as an alternate for Crushers GC, Smash GC and Legion XIII throughout the season on the LIV Golf League.

It is the second time that Catlin has won the Player of the Year award, after first being honoured in 2018. He joins an elite group of players who have received the award multiple times. Thai legend Thongchai Jaidee is a three-time winner, while his compatriot Thaworn Wiratchant and India’s Jeev Milkha Singh have both received it twice.
