Donald text spurs Meronk on as LIV Golf star’s quest for Ryder Cup place continues in Macau

2025-03-21

LIV Golf star Adrian Meronk is hoping that a good performance at International Series Macau presented by Wynn can support his bid for Ryder Cup selection this year as he revealed that Team Europe captain Luke Donald had been in touch about his good form.

With the biannual matchup between US and Europe taking place later this year at Bethpage Black, The Polish golfer got his season off to a flying start with victory under floodlights at the LIV Golf Riyadh event.

The 31-year-old had narrowly missed out on the last European team to face the United States in Rome, in 2023, after falling just short of the standings and then being bypassed for a captain’s pick by Donald.

That was despite being one of the form players in Europe with wins in late 2022, at the Australian Open, and in May 2023, when he secured the Italian Open on the Marco Simone course that was hosting the Ryder Cup.

That result prompted the six-foot six-inch Meronk to join Cleeks GC on the LIV Golf League, and the four-time European Tour champion is hopeful that he can produce a good run and continue to catch the eye of Donald.

Meronk is competing on International Series Macau presented by Wynn this weekend with three Open Championship places up for grabs on the second elevated event of 10 on the Asian Tour season.

He said: “Definitely, there are still lots of tournaments to be played, and competing against those guys on LIV Golf is not easy. So yes, if you are getting top 10s on there, you are playing well.

“Luke Donald texted me after my win in Riyadh and said, ‘keep playing well.’ Obviously, if I am playing well, I will be available and I want to play. But it is not my main goal. I think the focus is just to play well and see what happens.

“I feel like my game is progressing nicely, but I just need to be patient and work hard and see what happens.”

A top three this weekend would secure entry onto The Open at Royal Portrush in July. Meronk is currently six shots off third-placed Lucas Herbert of Australian team Rippers GC and compatriot Travis Smyth, and he needs a big weekend to climb the leaderboard.

He said: “It is the biggest goal this weekend, to grab one of those spots. I will need to have a good weekend to do that. Yes it is huge for us, especially for me. I do not have any majors yet this year, so that is going to be the main focus for this tournament.”

Referring to his experience so far on The International Series, the set of 10 elevated events on the Asian Tour, he said: “I like it. I already played the PIF Saudi international (powered by SoftBank) last year, and the set-up, the hospitality, everything is great.

“We are well taken care of and this week the course is bit different, and it is fun to play. I have enjoyed it, and hopefully I can produce some good golf.”
